One cannot help but begin with the Ferdinandea (which, in Gulino\u2019s work, has become almost a graphic sign\u2014an embedded icon, a coded signature: a small boat with a puff of steam above it), in order to arrive at his \u201cDomus\u201d within the ruined yet evocative space of the Church of the Spasimo.\nFor this time, that millenary sea from which the island re-emerges, as though reabsorbed into primordial magma\u2014the African sea of Pirandello\u2014is the very sea that returns letters that never reached their destination.\nEnvelopes ochre like sand, brown like earth and rust, blue like water; worn envelopes, envelopes with a triangular flap open in the shape of a house\u2014a house as children draw it, with a pointed roof\u2014that Domus which Mediterranean migrants so often seek in vain, but also that Domus which, more broadly, we all seek, often in vain as well.\nThe last, the excluded, the defeated\u2014but not only them. For we are all migrants or\u2014 to use Gulino\u2019s own words\u2014 we are all clandestine. Clandestine within life itself, in search of a landing place, of an embrace, of a home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Painted paper, iron, cardboard. Letters sent to bid farewell to one\u2019s homeland before facing the Mediterranean. Letters sent to give news upon arrival. Letters never sent\u2014like those so often found (and this is history) in the pockets of those who did not survive, preserved as their most precious possession, sealed within waterproof envelopes, pressed against the skin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Letters that almost become part of the ruined belly of the Church of Santo Spirito, the very church that hosts the exhibition like a Domus: they blend into the peeling walls, they enter into dialogue with the precious yet worn majolica tiles of the floor, with the light filtering through the windows (\u2026).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

(\u2026) Non si pu\u00f2 non partire dalla Ferdinandea (diventata nelle opere di Gulino quasi un segno grafico, un\u2019icona nascosta, una firma in codice: una barchetta con uno sbuffo di vapore sopra) per arrivare alla sua \u201cDomus\u201d nello spazio diruto ed evocativo della chiesa dello Spasimo. Perch\u00e9 questa volta quel mare millenario dove l\u2019isola torna, come risucchiata dal magma primigenio – il mare Affricano di Pirandello – \u00e8 il mare che restituisce lettere mai arrivate a destinazione. Buste ocra di sabbia, marroni di terra e di ruggine, azzurre come l\u2019acqua, buste logorate, buste con un lembo triangolare aperto a forma di casa \u2013 casa come la disegnano i bambini, con il tetto a punta \u2013 quella Domus che i migranti del Mediterraneo cercano spesso invano, ma quella Domus che pi\u00f9 complessivamente cerchiamo tutti, spesso pure invano. Gli ultimi, gli esclusi, gli sconfitti. Ma non solo loro. Perch\u00e9 siamo tutti migranti o \u2013 per dirla con Gulino \u2013 siamo tutti clandestini. Clandestini della vita, alla ricerca del punto di approdo, dell\u2019abbraccio, della casa.\u00a0 Carta dipinta, ferro, cartone. Lettere mandate per dire addio alla propria terra, prima di affrontare il Mediterraneo. Lettere inviate per dare notizia una volta approdati.
